Biogas Plant

The development of a large-scale Industrial Biogas Plant and Pipeline facility, one of the biggest in Ireland, is being proposed at Woodville, Ballymackey. The planned site is 8.2 hectares (20 acres) or approximately 8 full sized GAA pitches.

We believe that this development, at the heart of our community, poses serious concerns for the health, safety and wellbeing of the community and our environment.

Risks

  • Health hazards to adults and children, due to production of methane, hydrogen suplhida, ammonia and carbon dioxide.

  • Traffic, ~5x heavy vehicle traffic increase on rural roads used by walkers, joggers and cyclists

  • Contamination of water streams: Wilton stream, Ollatrim river, Nenagh river and local bogs

  • Risk of explosion of Biogas plant and pipelines. Explosions are the most common accident at Biogas plants, accounting for approximately 70% of cases.

  • Air quality and odour

  • Impact on property values

  • Vermin and insects, which might force residents to invest in pest control

  • Proximity to Ballaghveny Landfill, where explosive gas is currently produced and flared 24x7.
